The 50-year-old man was hospitalised after an alleged altercation following a car crash on Wednesday morning.
A 34-year-old man from Cardiff has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and remains in police custody.
Detective Inspector Carl Evans said: “Whilst we understand that reports of this nature can be concerning, we would like to reassure our local communities that this is unrelated to the murder in Alway on 7 May.
“We are doing everything we can do investigate both incidents, and will continue to carry out our enquiries in the area.”
The force urged anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident to contact police.
