‘My life now in danger’ – Ex-Education Secretary tells AIG, Abia Govt

Published on May 17, 2025 at 08:07 AM

Eighty-two-year-old former Education Secretary in Abia State, Onukwuo Joseph Onuegbu has appealed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 9 Umuahia and the Abia State government to save him from being killed because of his land.

Onukwue, who addressed journalists at the Correspondents’ Chapel office in Umuahia, alleged that some members of Ogbuti family inflicted injuries on him recently and also threatened to kill him.

He said that some members of the Ogbuti family in March, 2025, violently chased him and his daughter, Christiana away from a parcel of land called Ebeh, which he said was inherited from his late father in 1957 and that he had been farming or leasing it out to farmers.

He also complained to the AIG that the report he made at Bende Division of Nigerian Police Force was messed up, prompting him to report the matter to the Amaogwu village arbitration Panel for amicable handling of the matter.

“But during the second day of the arbitration Panel, they pounced on me, beating me with a big stick, dislocating my left shoulder and inflicting a big injury on my head. They earlier beat an 80-year-old man, Iroanya Onukwuo to stupor,”;; he alleged.

Onukwue, who said he was still struggling to recover from the injuries he suffered, expressed the fear that his life is endangered by the threat.

But Mr Ogbuti Chukwuemeka, who responded on behalf of the Ogbuti family, told journalists that nobody beat Onukwuo Joseph Onuegbu or threatened his life.

“I am telling you that nobody beat him, nobody chased him or is threatening his life.

“I don’t have boundaries with him, he is the one dragging my own land which I have been operating for over 40 years,”;; he claimed.
