But they are believed to have fled the country, the force added.

Grieving neighbours spoke of their shock amid the tragedy, as they described the family as “well to do”.

They told MailOnline : “They had a five series BMW car which I’d see them cleaning.

“He must have had a good job to afford that and to buy the house which has been renovated in the last few years.”

Another woman, who laid flowers outside the family home, said: “We are really sorry to lose her, she was such a gracious mother.”

Major units from Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Constabulary are leading the investigation.

Bedfordshire Police Assistant Chief Constable John Murphy described the incident as “deeply distressing”.

“We recognise that this will cause concern in the local community and beyond.

“This is the early stages of what is an incredibly complex investigation.

“We are committing all necessary resources to establish exactly what has happened and to find the person responsible.

“We have identified a suspect, who was known to all three victims, and who we believe has since left the country.”

Assistant Ch Con Murphy urged anyone with information on the suspected murders to come forward.

He continued: “While there is nothing to suggest there is any wider risk to the public, we will be increasing the police presence in and around the area to support the investigation and provide reassurance to residents.

“I would also ask people to be mindful of the privacy of the victims and avoid speculating about what might have happened.”

Anyone with information has been told to contact the force online or call 101 quoting Operation Snowdrift.
