The Assistant Controller General of Narcotics for Zone 12 in Owerri, Imo State, which includes the commands of Imo, Abia, and Anambra States within the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mrs. Florence Ezeonye, has urged Governor Alex Otti to relocate the NDLEA Command headquarters from Aba to Umuahia.

Mrs. Ezeonye stated that this move would bring drug law enforcement officials closer to the seat of government, thereby enhancing their operations.

The Assistant Controller General, accompanied by several zonal officers and the Abia State Commander of NDLEA, met with the Governor to discuss this matter. She noted that the Chairman of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, expressed gratitude for the housing provided in Umuahia and the vehicles donated to support NDLEA's operations.

She also extended her thanks to the Governor for the vehicles and the rehabilitation of the center he facilitated for NDLEA, emphasizing that the drug law enforcement officers had no reason to fail in their responsibilities, while also commending his achievements in infrastructure development.

In response, Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration's commitment to continue the fight against drug trafficking and abuse, highlighting that many young individuals turn to crime and use drug consumption to sustain it.

“You may notice that a significant number of young people engage in criminal activities and subsequently resort to drug use to support their actions,” stated the Governor.

He asserted that strict legislation, rather than rehabilitation, is the most effective approach to managing drug trafficking, abuse, and associated crimes.

He further elaborated that individuals committing involuntary crimes account for 20% of all crimes in society, while those engaged in voluntary crimes represent the remaining 80%, often resorting to crime as a means of survival.

Otti pledged to consider the NDLEA's request to relocate their State Command headquarters to Umuahia.
