A MAJOR motorway has closed after a lorry burst into flames on the M4 in Berkshire westbound.

National Highway has warned that the carriageway between Junction 12, Reading, and Junction 13, Newbury, is closed.

Multiple fire crews are battling to bring the blaze under control as thick black smoke has forced traffic on the eastbound side to a standstill too.

National Highways officers are at the scene helping to manage the gridlocked traffic, which is backing up for miles.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area and allow extra time for journeys.

National Highways said: “If this closure impacts on your plannedroute,please allow extra journey time.

“Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”;
