He was controlling the early rounds but started to tire towards the end of the fight and momentum shifted to Hrgovic.

Itauma eventually punched himself out in the ninth and started to wobble.

Hrgovic pounced on the opportunity – unleashing a succession of punches before the towel came in.

The referee waved off the fight at the same time and Itauma looked in a bad way.

The young fighter was seen getting stretchered out of the ring as his night ended in brutal fashion.

One clip circulating shows Itauma being taken out of the arena on the stretcher by medics as worried fans watched on.

Despite the distressing end to the fight for Itauma, Hrgovic was full of praise for his opponent.

He admitted he was the best fighter he has faced and said he was outboxed before the late stoppage.

Hrgovic said: “Thank you, let me tell you something. It was not me tonight, it was Jesus Christ in me. Holy Spirit, Father, Sun and the Holy Spirit. It was not me. I was losing every round.

“I was outboxed. And I don’t know where I got the energy in that [ninth] round.

“It was really not my strength; it was the Holy Spirit. He gave me the strength in this camp to endure everything and to have the best camp of my life. He put me in touch with this great coach, Abel Sanchez.

“I was in the best shape of my life because of him. He put me in touch with my manager, who changed my life. The best manager in business. Perfect camp and perfect fight.”
