In its effort to support vulnerable persons affected by the recent flooding in Mokwa, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has deployed a team of medical personnel to provide healthcare services to pregnant women and minors impacted by the disaster.
Teresa Pamma, UNICEF’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) specialist, said the intervention aims to assist children who have been traumatised by the flood.
She added that the team is on ground to ensure that affected residents have access to essential healthcare services, in order to prevent outbreak of disease following the flooding.
According to her, the medical team will also provide special care for pregnant women to ensure they receive the necessary services to prevent infection and promote maternal health.
Earlier, Niger State Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba, had, after visiting some resettlement areas in Mokwa town, commended UNICEF and other organizations which have responded to the flooding incident.
He stated, “On behalf of Farmer Governor Umaru Bago, I want to commend you (UNICEF) and other organisations for your interventions and support to our people.
“We will not take this for granted, right from when the incident took place, you were proactive and you are very much on ground. We commend you.”;
He also urged UNICEF to be patient with the people, noting that most of them are still traumatised and would need some level of psychological support and guidance.
