Owners Louise, 45, and Lisa, 47, had put Max out in the front lawn at around noon on September 14 when he suddenly vanished.

By 7pm the following day, Louise was starting to panic and the two of them put up missing posters around the .

When Lisa went to collect the mail from their shared post area later on, she discovered the distinctive white-tipped tail inside.

“I just heard Lisa screaming and crying,” said Louise.

“That is something I will never forget.”

Max’s tail was later sent to a specialist vet in Liverpool for forensic analysis.

His body was found in the nearby woods by a six days later, not far from Lisa and Louise’s home.

The pair feared Max might have been alive when his tail was cut off.

The couple held a candelit vigil for their cherished tabby outside their flat, near to his favourite tree.

Dozens of mourners came to show their respects and tie yellow ribbons around the branches.

Lisa and Louise – who have been together for nine years – said the disturbing ordeal had cast a shadow over their wedding plans.

They cancelled a pub celebration and buffet because they said could not stomach it after Max’s devastating death.

Insp Lucy Kevan, of Humberside , said: “I understand a report of this nature causes concern amongst the community.

“However, I would like to provide reassurance that we believe this to be an isolated incident.”
