Carrick, 44, briefly took over from Solskjaer for a three-match caretaker role at United in November and December 2021, before spending nearly three years at the helm of Middlesbrough in the Championship.
The club engaged in discussions with Carrick on Thursday.
Well-informed sources suggest that Carrick has gained traction in recent days as United's director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada consider their options.
Reports indicate that Solskjaer has “bunkered down” over the past week, having been notably present since relocating to England's north-west after his dismissal from Besiktas in August.
Some individuals at United were somewhat frustrated by the attention surrounding Solskjaer, who has managed just one team in the past four years.
Solskjaer, 52, managed United from December 2018 to November 2021, initially taking on the role on an interim basis.
Under Solskjaer, United secured third and second place in the Premier League, albeit in subdued atmospheres due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
He also led United to the 2021 Europa League final, despite their elimination from the Champions League group stage.
United faced a defeat against Villarreal in the Gdansk final after a penalty shootout, leaving Solskjaer’s term ultimately without any trophies.
During Solskjaer’s leadership, he entrusted the day-to-day coaching responsibilities to Carrick and Kieran McKenna, who is now the manager of Ipswich Town.
After Solskjaer suffered five losses in his last seven Premier League matches, he was replaced by Carrick, who had been part of the first-team coaching staff for three and a half years.
Carrick led United to victories against Villarreal and Arsenal, alongside a draw against Chelsea, before concluding his 15-and-a-half-year association with the club as both a player and manager.
Jose Mourinho appointed Carrick to his coaching staff in the summer of 2018 after the midfielder's retirement.
Fletcher’s time as interim coach effectively ended recently.
The 41-year-old is expected to report to United’s Carrington training complex on Monday.
Fletcher commented on Sunday evening: “I’ll find out whatever I need to know tomorrow morning.”
“I haven’t received any indications.”
This will likely be the new coach’s first game in charge.
