Authorities are investigating a new suspect in the notorious murder of British student Meredith Kercher.

The potential suspect left Italy shortly after the 21-year-old was killed in Perugia in 2007, as reported by the former prosecutor.

Giuliano Mignini, who oversaw the original investigation, has identified a new suspect, according to La Stampa.

He stated to the publication: “There are signs that this person may be involved. It’s someone I had not previously considered.”

No decision has been made regarding the formal reopening of the investigation.

Amanda Knox, Meredith’s American roommate, was convicted of murder alongside her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, but was later completely exonerated by Italy’s Supreme Court.

Rudy Guede, originally from the Ivory Coast, was convicted in 2008 for the sexual assault and murder of Meredith after his DNA was discovered at the crime scene.
