Former Abia State governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, has asserted that some Nigerians who were once involved in 419 schemes and other serious criminal activities abroad have now entered the political arena in the country.
Kalu alleged that many of these politicians had previously participated in advanced fee fraud and other significant crimes in South Africa and South America.
In a video posted on his Facebook page, the senator stated: “Many individuals, some of whom were abroad engaging in 419 and various dangerous crimes, demonstrate that a leopard cannot change its spots."
“When individuals are accustomed to taking money that isn’t theirs, they can never alter their character. If you expect them to change, you are mistaken. They will never change.”
“I believe that both civil servants and politicians who comprise the ruling class should take action to help redirect the economic trajectory of this country. The economic potential is immense if we approach it correctly.”
“Why should people hoard dollars in their homes? Why should individuals be distributing dollars? It’s not our legal currency. People should learn to integrate their funds into Nigeria’s economy so that the country can benefit from the transactions we conduct.”
“I think we are working diligently, despite complaints. Many individuals who were in South Africa and South America, engaging in various businesses, are now involved in politics, but that is the reality we face.”
The former Senate Chief Whip also urged well-intentioned Nigerians to participate in politics for the right reasons, rather than for financial gain.
He remarked: “Let good individuals come forward and improve politics as it should be. It’s not meant for saints. This field is not for saints, but it’s also not for those who have tarnished their integrity by cheating others, whether they are white or black.”
“For me, I appeal to our citizens: let us support our economic reforms, regardless of our political affiliations. We should unite and turn over a new leaf.”
