United consulted several managers towards the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, anticipating that Ten Hag would be dismissed.
, along with other managers, were also approached by United.
United finished eighth in the Premier League – their lowest position since 1990 – and ended up at the bottom of their group in 2023-24.
Nevertheless, they advanced to the final and, against all expectations, triumphed over champions City 2-1, which spared Ten Hag from being sacked at the end of that season.
Later, Coach Frank took over in the summer, and in his new book, *Thomas Frank – Diary from the Premier League: The Story of Denmark’s Greatest Coach*, he reveals that he interviewed for both the United and Tottenham jobs on the same day.
“Sitting down to talk to two of the ten biggest clubs in the world – just two hours apart – is quite extraordinary,” Frank shared with TV2.
“I know I didn’t get either position, but it was still a significant moment.
“I recall walking through Battersea Park between the two interviews and thinking, ‘Thomas Frank from f*****g Frederiksværk – am I really experiencing this?’”
It is understood that even after United decided to retain Ten Hag – who was ultimately dismissed five months later – Frank continued to speak highly of the club, keeping the door open for future opportunities.
After an end-of-season review, United opted to keep Ten Hag and exercised the one-year extension in his contract in July 2024.
However, he was eventually sacked after suffering four defeats in the first nine Premier League matches of the previous season.
Ironically, Ten Hag’s last victory and final home match in charge of United was against Frank’s Brentford in October 2024.
