But the 24-year-old has expressed his wish to stay at United beyond Monday’s transfer deadline.
Sun Sport previously revealed United were prepared to block requests from senior players to leave in the winter window .
Zirkzee’s representatives were also told there was “no chance” of a mid-season move .
Zirkzee has missed the last two games through injury but has resumed training this week and could be on the bench for the Premier League visit of Fulham on Sunday.
When asked about Zirkzee’s future on Friday, United head coach Michael Carrick said: “I think Josh has just been trying to work to get fit and get back around the group and it’s been great to have him back training yesterday with a group for the first time.
“That’s literally as far as it goes for me and for Josh. I’m looking forward to working with him. That’s it.
“Nothing else needs to be said.”
United bought Zirkzee from Italian side Bologna for £36.5million in July 2024 but he has only scored two Premier League goals within the last year.
The Netherlands international has made four starts this term, scoring in the win at Crystal Palace and draw with Wolves.
However, United have produced their best performances and results without an out-and-out striker.
Summer signing Benjamin Sesko started on the bench for the triumphs against Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal.
Before Ruben Amorim was sacked, Zirkzee was largely seen as backup to Sesko for the centre-forward spot.
But in both games under Carrick, Bryan Mbeumo has started up top and scored, potentially pushing Zirkzee further down the pecking order.
The likelihood is Zirkzee will be sold in the summer as United look to recruit a specialist striker to provide support for Sesko.
Zirkzee was brought in as a No9 to provide an alternative option to Rasmus Hojlund but he appears more at ease as a No10.
