With a nod to his Man Utd stint, Amorim responded: “I was in a club in the past with a lot of legends, and they have big opinions, and they talk a lot about things. They lived in a time that was completely different.”

Amorim then went on to add: “I do not want my players to forget the importance of playing for and winning for AC Milan. For me, that is the most important thing.

“We need time, but how much time we have depends on the club and not on me.

“We have to build a foundation to win consistently and that takes time. If we look at the Premier League, how long did take to win?

“And if we also look in Italy at Juventus and Inter. It takes time to win consistently and you have to build something.

“To buy time, we have to win on Saturday. By winning, we will have more time to build our project.”

During Friday’s press conference, which took place on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Amorim also made a clumsy analogy about an “aeroplane accident”.

He said: “I think we should improve in every training session.

“I expect that my players understand, it’s like when you have an accident with an airplane, you learn something from.”

Amorim swiftly backtracked, admitting: “It’s not a good comparison, you understand what I mean.

“If something wrong happens, we take a lot of information and we put it in training sessions.”
