Residents of the six-story apartment building in the coastal city of Valencia were astonished, as the last sighting of the man—reportedly a retired builder—was in 2010.

The father of two had been residing alone in the top-floor flat after separating from his wife and had not communicated with his two adult sons, according to local reports.

Neighbors believed he had moved to a retirement home.

His utility bills and community fees were current, as they were automatically deducted from his bank account, into which his pension was still being deposited.
