A man who was reportedly armed with a handgun has been shot and killed by police following a two-vehicle collision, according to authorities.
The police were called to London Road in Thetford, Norfolk, around 8:30 PM on Sunday after receiving reports of an accident.
Norfolk Police stated that a man, believed to be the driver of one of the vehicles involved, left the scene while brandishing what appeared to be a handgun.
Armed response officers arrived at the scene, and the suspect was shot by police from “a short distance away.”
Despite the efforts of emergency services, he was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene.
The A11 remains closed in both directions from the Thetford Ranges roundabout to the Brandon Road roundabout.
Assistant Chief Constable David Buckley remarked: “We recognize that this incident may raise concerns within the community.
“Our highly trained armed officers respond to hundreds of firearms-related calls each year, but instances where police discharge firearms are fortunately very rare. A comprehensive and independent investigation is already in progress.
“We are fully cooperating with the IOPC investigation and will provide all body-worn camera footage and 999 calls to ensure transparency.
“We are not seeking anyone else in connection with this incident.”
