A total of three vehicles were involved in the collision, which was reported around 3:40 PM today.
Traffic is being diverted due to the closure.
A spokesperson for National Highways stated: “The M61 northbound between J5 (Wigan) and J6 (Chorley), Greater Manchester, is closed due to a collision with serious injuries reported.”
“Emergency services from Greater Manchester, the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, the North West Ambulance Service, and our officers are on the scene.”
Due to rush hour traffic, there are currently delays of up to an hour on the M61, with congestion stretching back five miles.
Inrix, the traffic data company, reported: “All traffic is being temporarily held, resulting in long delays due to an accident on the M61 Northbound from J5 A58 Snydale Way (Westhoughton) to J6 A6027 De Havilland Way (Horwich). Congestion extends to the J6 exit.”
Although serious injuries have been reported, it is believed that no fatalities have occurred.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police commented: “At approximately 3:40 PM today (16 December), officers responded to reports of a collision on the M61 near junction 6.”
“Emergency services are present, and efforts are ongoing at the scene.”
National Highways is now indicating that normal traffic conditions are not expected to resume until around 9 PM.
