DRIVERS have been cautioned about significant traffic congestion on the M6 following a serious accident.
This evening, the motorway has been shut down as a large presence of emergency services responds to the “multi-vehicle collision.”

Motorists have been redirected away from the area, northbound between J21 and J21A near Warrington.
A spokesperson from National Highways stated: “The M6 in Cheshire is closed northbound between J21 and J21A near Warrington due to a collision.
“At approximately 17:30, a collision involving two cars was reported to Cheshire police.
“Emergency services, including police, fire, ambulance, and National Highways personnel, were dispatched to the scene and are currently present.”
“Delays are expected as traffic approaches the closure, and diversion routes are in place.”
A representative for the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service commented: “Firefighters have responded to a road traffic collision on the M6. The Highways Agency and police are also on site, along with personnel from the North West Ambulance Service, who are assisting casualties at the scene.
“Firefighters have had to extricate one individual from a vehicle.
“The carriageway has been closed, and traffic management is being handled by Highways.”
A diversion route has been established, advising motorists to exit the M6 northbound at junction 21.
Drivers are instructed to take the second exit onto the B5210 northbound and continue for approximately two miles.
At the large roundabout with the A574 (Birchwood Way), take the third exit onto the A574 eastbound.
At the roundabout with M62 junction 11, take the first exit to join the M62 westbound.
Travel along the M62 westbound and exit at junction 9.
At the roundabout, take the third exit onto the A49 northbound.
Then, at the next roundabout, take the third exit and continue on the A49/A572 north.
This route will allow motorists to rejoin the M6 at junction 22.
