Emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene of the collision, which took place between Junction 12, for Toddington, and Junction 11A, for Dunstable.
Commuters and workers heading northbound are advised to anticipate 30-minute delays and two miles of traffic congestion.
National Highways has confirmed that three out of four lanes remain closed on this busy route.
It stated: “Traffic has been STOPPED on the M1 northbound in Bedfordshire within J12 (Toddington) due to a collision.
“Three lanes (of four) remain closed on the #M1 northbound in Bedfordshire between J11A ( #Dunstable ) and J12 ( #Toddington ) following a collision.
“Emergency services are on the scene. There’s a 30-minute delay on approach with two miles of congestion.“
Bedfordshire Police have urged drivers to avoid the area while officers manage the situation.
In an earlier statement, the police said: “We are currently at the scene of a collision on the M1 northbound between junctions 11A & 12.
“All lanes are currently closed as emergency services address the incident.
“Please avoid the area if possible and consider alternative routes to help alleviate congestion.”
