LUKE LITTLER’S competitors have been criticized for behaving like “fanboys instead of adversaries.”

He is also closing in on the top position after defeating Cool Hand Humphries in the World Grand Prix.

However, Vincent van der Voort, known for his candidness, believes that some of Littler’s rivals are intimidated by him.

The Dutchman acknowledged that the current standard of play is “incredibly high” and that the sport is in a “good place overall,” but he cautioned against a recurring trend seen in previous eras dominated by great players.

He stated in an interview with Online Darts : “Not everyone is scared of him, but many are. I mentioned it after the Worlds – too many top players behave like fanboys instead of opponents. Of course, it’s challenging; Littler is exceptional.

“But you need to remind yourself: Yes, he’s fantastic, but I will do everything in my power to defeat him. Don’t just keep praising him...

“This pattern occurred with Phil Taylor and later with Michael van Gerwen.

“That’s what happens when a player is dominant. However, others must still step up and give their all.

“[Gerwyn] Price should have beaten him at the Grand Prix but fell short, making it even tougher next time. Eventually, someone must stop him.”

Van der Voort continued: “It’s remarkable how frequently he wins, but darts is more exciting when there’s competition.

“The other players need to get into his head a bit, unsettle him, and do something different. Otherwise, he will continue to dominate.”

Van der Voort, 49, drew parallels between Littler and Van Gerwen, who was the youngest darts world champion until Littler emerged, having won the title at age 24.

He added: “As long as you keep winning, confidence takes care of itself. I saw that firsthand with Michael. His belief was so strong that he didn’t even consider his opponents.

“Each match was merely another opportunity to defeat someone. Littler is in that phase now. Eventually, he will face some challenges – then we’ll see how mentally resilient he truly is.

“But right now, you have to play incredibly well to beat him.”

In November, the Grand Slam of Darts and Players Championship finals will occur, followed by the World Darts Championship in December.
