Previously, she had to undergo the removal of her entire large intestine (colon) due to her inflammatory bowel condition, which led to her receiving a life-saving stoma bag.
On Christmas Eve, Louise shared that she spent a significant amount of time in the hospital undergoing a procedure.
Louise underwent a proctoscopy, which is an examination where an endoscopist directly inspects the anal canal using a small rigid proctoscope.
Taking to her Instagram page to disclose her hospital visit and explain the procedure, Louise posted several photos in a hospital gown.
“It looks dramatic, but it wasn’t. I had a proctoscopy today. It’s similar to a colonoscopy but less invasive since I don’t have a colon, so the camera doesn’t have far to go,” she wrote over the first image.
“It was still quite awkward and a little uncomfortable, but fentanyl is a miracle drug,” she added.
She then shared an image of herself wearing a nasal cannula.
Louise continued, “These appointments are very important, and they managed to fit me in quite urgently. I eagerly accepted the December 24th appointment, but when it arrived, I realized the significance of it being Christmas Eve.
“What it REALLY made me reflect on was…
“Despite all the chaos I’ve experienced, I still feel incredibly fortunate to have the NHS, which NEVER takes a break in emergencies.”
She added in the following post: “The NHS never sleeps.
“I had a proctoscopy today.
“A little Christmas Eve camera up my bum.
“The NHS was still operating at full capacity. Well, not quite, but you understand what I mean.
“It prompted me to express my gratitude to everyone working in the NHS over the holiday period.”
She concluded with, “Thank you for keeping the country running and for caring for our loved ones.”
Common reasons for undergoing a proctoscopy include rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, or changes in bowel habits.
