"Brace for Commute Chaos: Bus Strikes Set for Four Days This Week Amid Heatwave Dispute, with More Dates to Come!"

BUS strikes are set to hit London for four days this week as some 1,500 drivers walk out over extreme heat disputes.

Travel chaos is expected to break out after drivers rejected attempts to resolve a disagreement over working in hot weather.

The drivers are demanding more .

The will affect 42 routes in the capital as 1,500 members of Unite in North London and Essex walk out.

Arriva North, their employer, had their latest offer to put an end to the strikes rejected.

The Unite members initially paused strikes which were meant to happen between August 19 to 21 after negotiations.

Workers voted on a new offer but said it didn’t go far enough to resolve the hot issues.

The union said its members balloted against an offer to resolve the row.

Strikes will restart on Tuesday for four days until Friday this week.

This action will then be followed by multiple dates in September and October.

A Unite spokesperson claimed most Arriva North London buses do not have air conditioning – but instead less effective air cooling systems.

The cooling systems only reduce temperatures by around two or three during heatwaves, unions say.

Buses can therefore reach around 40C on the worst days.

Unite says this extreme heat can put drivers at increased danger of fatigue.

It has also caused some drivers to suffer problems including heat exhaustion, heat and dehydration, the union says.

Drivers will walkout from Barking, Edmonton, Enfield, Grays, Palmers Green, Stamford Hill, Tottenham, and Wood Green garages.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “London bus drivers do a vital job, but are putting themselves at risk due to these appalling conditions. Arriva can fully afford to make meaningful changes our members can accept.

“Until that happens, strike action will continue and our members at Arriva North London will continue to have the full backing of Unite.”

Unite regional officer Steven Stockwell said: “There is still time for Arriva to stop this disruptive action, but it relies on it coming back to the table with a deal our members believe will solve the serious problems with conditions once and for all.”

All strikes will begin at 4am and finish at 4.30am on the final day of the action.

Many of the dates in August and September are set to coincide with closures of the Piccadilly line as new trains are tested.

This will further increase disruption across North London.
