THE REFEREE assigned for the crunch Champions League clash between Liverpool and Galatasaray was REPLACED just before kick-off due to injury.

The Reds take on Galata in a must-win second leg after losing 1-0 in the reverse fixture of their Last-16 clash in Istanbul last week.

But the crucial game takes place without the ref that was originally placed to officiate at Anfield.

Szymon Marciniak suffered an injury during his pre-match warm-up and it was deemed that he couldn’t carry out his duties.

And so Marciniak, 45, was replaced by compatriot Paweł Raczkowski, who was originally assigned as the fourth official.

Raczkowski suffered a rough start with the home fans booing him quite a bit as he stopped play a few times after Galatasaray players went down with a knock.

Marciniak has officiated a number of major encounters throughout his 17-year career.
