Leicester raced into a 3-0 lead against inside the opening half hour thanks to goals from Divine Mukasa, Patson Daka and Abdul Fatawu.
Fans were feeling confident of finally seeing a win under Andy King, who replaced Marti Cifuentes last month.
But with just 30 minutes remaining, disaster struck as Southampton pulled one back through Ross Stewart.
Jack Stephens grabbed a second for the Saints in the 82nd minute.
And five minutes later it was 3-3 thanks to Ryan Manning’s strike.
But Southampton weren’t done yet, with Shea Charles grabbing a dramatic winner in the sixth minute of stoppage time to seal a sensational comeback.
The result means Leicester have now tumbled to 21st in the Championship.
And they could yet fall into the relegation zone should 22nd-place Blackburn, who are level on points but behind on goal difference, win their game-in-hand against QPR on Valentine’s Day.
Fans were quick to react on Twitter to Leicester’s latest disaster.
The Foxes were hit with a six-point deduction for breaching financial rules earlier this month.
But throwing away a three-goal lead was an even more bitter pill to swallow.
One said: “This could just be the worst thing I’ve ever seen.”
Another declared: “Get rid of the whole squad.”
One noted: “Seriously one of the worst games we’ve ever had.”
Another added: “Sack them all.”
