Former Sun journalist Dave Bootle has passed away at the age of 86.

The Features production leader worked at the newspaper for over 30 years, having joined when The Sun was still located just off Fleet Street.

He was a well-known presence in our offices, often seen wearing stylish waistcoats long before they became fashionable again.

Dave also managed The Sun’s football team, which featured two of the paper’s columnists – former strikers and Malcolm “Supermac” Macdonald.

Dave began his newspaper career at The Evening Mail in Barrow-in-Furness and later took on the role of editor at The Ilford Recorder.

A father of two, he was born in Bethnal Green, East London, and resided in Dagenham for over 50 years, where he was a well-known and beloved local figure.

He was married to Hazel for over 30 years. Following her passing, Dave married Philomena, with whom he spent 24 years.

Dave, who died peacefully a few days before Christmas, is survived by Philomena and his sons, David and Stephen.

The funeral will take place at South Essex Crematorium in Upminster on Monday, January 12, at 12:30 PM.
