Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to the Ogun State Governor, Kayode Akinmade has argued that while leaders are open to constructive criticism that is fair, factual, and aimed at improvement, they should not be reduced to insults or personal attacks, under the guise of religion or politics.
Akinmade emphasised the availability of a number of appropriate channels for raising issues and interacting with government officials, arguing that this should not be done carelessly or abusively.
The media aide gave the remark while receiving members of Gateway Bloggers during a courtesy visit to his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Wednesday.
Akinmade noted that as bloggers and content creators they must be responsible and factual in their reporting.
He clarified that he’s not advising them to avoid pointing out wrong but the manner at which it is done, adding that if the government is wrong, “we are quick to admit it and make corrections.”
Akinmade said, “As bloggers and content creators In our social engagement, we must be responsible. I am not saying you should avoid pointing out what is wrong. On the contrary, if we are wrong, we are quick to admit it and make corrections. We are open to constructive criticism—criticism that is fair, factual, and aimed at improvement.
“However, criticism should not be reckless or abusive. There are many appropriate channels through which concerns can be raised and government officials engaged. Leadership should not be reduced to insults or personal attacks, especially under the guise of religion or politics.
“There is a clear difference between responsible civic engagement and inflammatory conduct.”
The special adviser noted that as a government, there are procedures and structures followed and none can work without the support and cooperation of the populace.
“We need everyone’s cooperation to strengthen our value chain. Let us continue to work together with sincerity, patience, and faith—trusting that when the time is right, God will reward us all,” he added.
Speaking earlier, Olamide David, the group’s state coordinator, stated that their goal is to showcase the true beauty, progress and potential of the state beyond misconceptions and false information.
He added that they were accountable and dedicated to moral narrative that promotes rather than hinders development.
