The Lagos State Government has reacted with concern to the collapse of a bungalow classroom block at Odokekere High School in Ikorodu, reassuring parents, students and the general public that no life was lost in the incident.

The government, through the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools, SCRPS, described the development as unfortunate, noting that it received the report of the collapse with shock.

According to the committee, initial findings revealed that the affected block had already been slated for demolition under an ongoing plan to replace old structures with more durable buildings to meet the school’s increasing enrolment.

“The classroom block had earlier been identified and marked for demolition as part of efforts to construct a befitting structure that can adequately cater for the large student population,” the statement explained.

SCRPS confirmed that the incident did not result in any casualty, emphasising that all students were safe and unharmed.

“We wish to clearly state that no casualty was recorded in the building collapse, and all students are in good condition,” the committee said.

The statement further disclosed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had directed that students affected by the incident be immediately relocated to neighbouring schools to ensure that teaching and learning activities continue without interruption.

Meanwhile, officials of the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools are expected to visit the school for an on-the-spot assessment.

The visit, the committee noted, will help fast-track plans for the construction of a modern classroom block to replace the collapsed structure.
