The Lagos State Government has urged the Federal Government, via the Ministry of Works, to promptly address the deteriorating condition of the Apapa Bridge and the surrounding road infrastructure. They caution that ongoing neglect could lead to significant safety hazards and disrupt economic activities within the port corridor.
In a statement to journalists in Lagos, Mr. Adekoya Hassan, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation and Logistics, highlighted that Apapa serves as a vital hub for Nigeria’s economy, functioning as the primary evacuation route for cargo, petroleum tankers, and commuters associated with the Lagos Port Complex.
Hassan emphasized that immediate action from the Ministry of Works is essential to prevent a potential structural failure of the bridge.
“We are worried about the heavy-duty truck traffic leaving this terminal. Even if this road were repaired multiple times, the outcome would still be a collapse. It is the only exit route from Apapa, Lagos port, and the current road has been under construction for an extended period,” he stated.
He warned that the collapse of the bridge would have significant repercussions for port operations and the national economy.
“If the Minister does not take action regarding this road, and it collapses at any moment, it will severely impact the nation’s ports here. Therefore, we are urging the Minister to prioritize the repair of this road,” he added.
“While we appreciate the government’s efforts to enhance infrastructure across the country, we urge them to focus on the Apapa ports, which are a critical gateway to our economy. These roads urgently require repairs and maintenance to ensure efficient operations. We are eager to see improvements in this vital area.”
Additionally, Mr. Saheed Mahmoud, the Chairman of the Apapa Truck Cargoes, expressed concerns about the worsening road conditions, stating it has become a significant hazard for truck operators.
“This road is damaging our trucks. When coming from Apapa, once you reach this road, accidents happen. Some trucks overturn with their cargo here. We are appealing to the Federal Government for assistance with repairs,” Mahmoud remarked.
Mr. Ayo Vaughan, the Chairman of Klassique Tenor Limited, called on the Federal Government to carry out a substantial reconstruction of the road, arguing that prior repair attempts have been unsuccessful.
“About three months ago, the Federal Government performed a temporary fix on this road, but it has already deteriorated again. The Minister of Works may not be aware of the situation in Lagos, but we need something solid that will endure over time. They also need to address the repairs on the Apapa Costain Road,” Vaughan stated.
