The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has reported that a power surge and negligence were the primary causes of the fire that destroyed a section of the Alaba International Market.
In their statement, the agency confirmed that no casualties or injuries occurred as a result of the incident.
They noted that they received an emergency call at 7:18 p.m. regarding a fire outbreak at 155 Olojo Drive, across from Tantalizers, within the Alaba International Market, located in the Ojo Local Government Area of the state.
The agency further explained that upon receiving the alert, the Ojo and Ijegun-Egba fire stations were promptly dispatched to the location.
It was revealed that the incident involved several lock-up shops of various sizes situated within a two-storey building, covering approximately 648 square meters, which is part of a larger market area that spans about five hectares.
“Initial investigations indicated that the fire began on the top floor of the building shortly after electricity was restored, due to negligence on the part of some shop owners.
“Access to the affected areas was difficult as most shops were closed for the day, requiring forced entry to access and extinguish the fire. This delay contributed to the spread of the flames, which were, however, contained to that floor,” a portion of the statement read.
