His warning comes as two hundred bosses of leading accommodation firms including Butlin’s, Haven and Parkdean Resorts warned the government over the move in a scathing letter.

Mr Tice said: “This is simply another tax on working families and British businesses at a time when people already face mounting pressures on their household budgets.

“Travelling within your own country should not come with another hidden charge tacked on at the end of your holiday.

“The government should focus on economic growth rather than penalising Brits for taking a holiday.”

UK Hospitality chief Kate Nicholls said: “Our guesthouses, B&Bs and hotels are already struggling with crippling rates bills and this will hit hard working families, communities and make worse.”
