On Tuesday, residents of the Bayagan-Ile community in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State celebrated joyfully upon the release of their traditional ruler, Oba Kamilu Salami, from the hands of armed bandits.
He regained his freedom after spending 25 days in captivity, having been abducted while working on his farm.
Excited community members flocked to the monarch's palace following the announcement of his release, eager to see him after his safe return.
Ayinla Lawal, the community's spokesman, confirmed the news on Wednesday morning.
The community leader disclosed that the monarch was released after a substantial sum of money was paid to the bandits in two separate installments.
“I’m pleased to share that our monarch was freed on Tuesday night,” he stated.
“Our elders and community members have requested that we refrain from disclosing the exact amount, but it was significant. Throughout our ordeal, neither the local government nor the state government came to our aid.”
“Only the community members contributed to the ransom. It was an incredibly challenging time for us, which is why it took longer for our monarch to be released.”
“Above all, we thank Almighty God for his safe return, and we also express our gratitude to the media and community members for their support,” the spokesman added.
The monarch’s younger brother, known simply as Aliyu, who transported the monarch to a private hospital in Ilorin for medical care, also confirmed the news.
The community had appointed Aliyu to deliver the ransom in two installments to the bandits at their hideout.
Zubair Olaitan, head of the Joint Security Watch for the Kwara South Senatorial District, also confirmed the news to DAILY POST on Wednesday, adding that “he has been reunited with his family since Tuesday.”
Attempts to reach the spokesperson for the state police command, SP Adetoun Ejire Adeyemi, in Ilorin on Wednesday were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
