A missionary Catholic priest serving in Gambia, Rev. Fr. Kelvin Ugwu, has remarked that Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Sokoto Diocese has become “politically different” from the outspoken cleric he once was.
Ugwu made this statement in a Facebook post on Saturday while addressing the recent controversy surrounding Bishop Kukah’s remarks on the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
He noted that many Nigerians have been hesitant to respond to Kukah’s comments due to the bishop’s long-standing reputation, but his recent position indicates a departure from his earlier principles.
“The reality is that we are treading carefully on this issue because it involves Bishop Kukah. I can assure you, if it were someone else, I know how we would have reacted,” Ugwu expressed.
“While I have deep admiration for Bishop Kukah and have drawn significant inspiration from him over the years, I must say that after closely following him for a long time and analyzing his past and present stances, the Kukah we see now is politically different.”
The priest accused Bishop Kukah of not applying the same standards of criticism to the current administration that he used against the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“All the issues he criticized the previous government for, we are now experiencing in a more severe form under the current administration. If he wishes to start showing this administration some understanding and sympathy, I believe the best way to begin would be to apologize to others for not extending the same understanding to them, particularly to Buhari.”
“Furthermore, it is important to note that this government came into power through one of the most rigged elections in Nigeria, with INEC going back on their commitments regarding the use of BVAS. To me, it doesn’t truly matter what Tinubu does in office unless we are prepared to admit that the end now justifies the means,” Ugwu concluded.
