The Kogi State Government has confirmed an early morning attack on a Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ejiba, located in the Yagba West Local Government Area of the state, which took place on Sunday.
The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, who issued a statement in Lokoja on Sunday, strongly condemned the incident.
According to DAILY POST, the assailants who targeted the church allegedly abducted the pastor, his wife, and several other worshippers.
This incident has caused panic in the Ejiba community, with residents frantically searching for safe places to take cover.
Fanwo described the event as tragic and unfortunate, assuring that all victims would be rescued.
“Those who attacked Ejiba must have been hiding in the community for some time or in nearby bushes,” he stated.
“Some villagers may have noticed them and chosen to remain silent. If you fail to alert authorities when you see unfamiliar faces during such times, who knows who will become victims of their violence?”
“Worshipping in secluded areas without security, especially just weeks after worshippers were kidnapped from a church in Kwara State, is not advisable,” he added.
“We all need to be vigilant right now. It is essential to share any intelligence you may have,” he advised.
The commissioner noted that the state government, in partnership with the Yagba West Local Government Area, has been actively working to combat crime in the region, given its status as a border area.
He stated that Ejiba has experienced its share of criminal activities, yet some pastors still encourage their congregations to worship in remote churches during such perilous times, without sufficient regard for safety.
“It’s easy to blame the government, but those who suffer at the hands of these relentless criminals are our own people. So, why not exercise wisdom?”
“When you see something, say something. Avoid attending unsecured churches and mosques at this time.”
“Please refrain from unnecessary travel right now. Any journey through high-risk areas should be avoided. Do not disclose your movements to anyone,” he advised.
Fanwo stated that the state government, in collaboration with security forces, has implemented significant measures to rescue the kidnapped victims.
