Knight Salute will likely miss the rest of the season after suffering a ‘severe’ setback

Harris, who himself spent a week in intensive care earlier this month, said the four-year-old gelding is unlikely to race again this campaign.

The trainer wrote on Twitter: “We are very disappointed to have to announce that our stable flag bearer/warrior, Knight Salute, has unfortunately met with a severe setback.

“He was having a tooth extracted and unfortunately injured himself getting up from the general anaesthetic, he will most likely miss the rest of the season.

“Our current priority is to make his life comfortable.”

The Aintree Grade 1 winner was sensational last season, winning three straight Grade 2s before dead-heating with Pied Piper during the Grand National meeting.

In October Pied Piper got the better of Knight Salute when they locked horns at Cheltenham.

While Knight Salute, owned by the Four Candles Partnership, disappointed in third behind Knappers Hill in the Grade 2 Unibet Elite Hurdle at Wincanton last month.

Punters were quick to wish the horse well in his recovery.

One said: “My absolute favorite horse in training won’t be seen for the rest of the season… I am absolutely gutted.”

Another wrote: “Terrible news! Most importantly, I just hope he recovers fully.”

A fellow Twitter user said: “Unfortunate, cracking horse hopefully has a good recovery and we see him back better than ever in the future.”
