The Senate has instructed its joint committee on security to investigate the abrupt withdrawal of military personnel from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, just before bandits launched an attack.
The committee is expected to deliver its findings within two weeks.
This resolution came after a motion was presented by Senate Deputy Leader, Lola Ashiru, during Wednesday’s plenary session, titled “Urgent Need to Address Escalating Insecurity in Kwara, Kebbi and Niger: Call for Immediate and Comprehensive Federal Intervention.”
The upper chamber also called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Brig-Gen. Musa Uba, and it resolved to dissolve its standing committees on National Security, Intelligence, and the Air Force, with plans to reconstitute them.
The Senate leadership was directed to meet with President Bola Tinubu to update him on the resolutions.
The Senate observed a moment of silence to honor the victims of the attack.
Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau pointed out that insecurity across the nation has escalated following comments made by former US President Donald Trump, which suggested potential foreign military intervention to address the perceived genocide of Christians in Nigeria.
“Since then, the frequency of terrorist activities has surged, indicating that those responsible for these heinous acts do not have the best interests of our country at heart,” he stated, calling for the use of technology to combat such threats.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele remarked, “It is significant that many individuals kidnapped from Kwara, Kebbi, and Niger have been freed. However, many Nigerians are left wondering at what cost.”
While some assert that the government negotiated for their release, the official stance remains that no ransom was paid.
