Thousands of mourners on Thursday thronged Zuru in Kebbi State as the late Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Muhammad Usman Zuru (Lifiddan Zuru), was laid to rest amid deep grief.

The funeral prayer, held at the Zuru Jumu’at Mosque around 6:00 p.m. and led by Imam Suleiman Tanko, drew a large crowd of sympathisers, including government officials, traditional rulers and political leaders from within and outside the state.

The Speaker died on Monday, April 6, 2026, at a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, after a prolonged illness.

Those in attendance included Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris; the Emir of Zuru, Muhammadu Sanusi Sami Gomo III; Deputy Governor, Umar Abubakar Tafida; Senator Muhammad Adamu Alieru; and former Governor Saidu Usman Nasamu Dakingari, alongside members of the State House of Assembly and Executive Council.

At the funeral, Governor Idris described the Speaker’s death as a major loss to the state and the nation.

“His passing is a monumental loss not only to his family and the people of Zuru Emirate but to Kebbi State and the nation at large.

He was a man of humility, dedication, and unwavering commitment to legislative service and the progress of our state,” he said.

“The overwhelming turnout of mourners from within and beyond Kebbi State is a clear reflection of the impact he made on the lives of our people and the respect he earned across all levels.

“We pray that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings, grants him Aljannatul Firdaus, and gives his family, the Kebbi State House of Assembly, and the entire people of our state the strength to bear this great loss.

“May his gentle soul rest in peace,” Idris added.
