The Katsina State Government has promised to involve children in key decision-making processes, especially on issues affecting their welfare and development.

Deputy Governor, Alhaji Faruq Lawal-Jobe made the pledge on Friday while receiving members of the state’s Children’s Parliament.

“I’ll direct the Commissioners for Youths, his counterpart in Women Affairs as well as the Special Adviser on Girl-Child Education to sit down with you.And also, there should be representation from the Ministry of Budget, and then the Coordinator of the state’s Community Development Programme (CDP).So that you can tell us more about what you want. This is timely, because we’re doing this at the time when we’re preparing for the 2026 budget.”

He added that since citizens were engaged across all 361 wards during the 2026 budget planning, extending similar consultations to children would be fitting. He also urged the parliamentarians to sensitise their peers on school enrollment to boost education access.

Speaker of the Children’s Parliament, Fadila Sani, praised the government for establishing Sexual Assault Referral Centres, Gender-Based Violence centres, and a Child Rights Implementation Committee.

She, however, called for stronger implementation of child protection laws, the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, and higher budget allocations for children-related programmes.
