Kano: SSANU seeks justice after brutal murder of staff by phone snatchers

Published on June 15, 2025 at 11:53 AM

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Northwest University Kano branch said it was shocked and devastated after the brutal murder of a lift operator in the university, Buhari Imam.

The young man was fatally stabbed by phone snatchers in his home situated at Sheka Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State at the late hours of Thursday 12th June, 2025.

The group described the late Imam as a young, energetic, hardworking and promising Engineer.

He was a staff of the Directorate of Maintenance Services and has recently obtained Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Kano State Polytechnic in his quest to develop his career in the service.

In a statement signed by Comrade Muhammad Jaji, Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) Northwest University Kano Branch on Saturday, the group condemned in totality, the act and atrocities of phone robbers and their cohorts that led to the brutal killing of their colleague.

Reports said Imam was stabbed on the right part of his stomach which caused various degrees of injuries. SSANU noted with despair that, “Despite swift and immediate intervention of Good Samaritan who rushed him to AKTH, he couldn’t sustain the severe wound and later gave up the ghost.

“This nefarious and heinous act has confirmed the wide speculation that Kano State has now turned into a hub of phone snatchers.”;

The statement added that there are specific locations in the ancient city where residents cannot freely bring out their phones in public without fear.

“The risk of being attacked, wounded or even killed for a mobile device has become increasingly a daily affairs. Even passengers in tricycle are not left out; phone snatchers operate brazenly in broad daylight, targeting unsuspecting citizens who are simply trying to make a call. This is not just a mere theft—it is a full-blown security breach one that must be reverted before it is too late.”;

SSANU therefore, calls on the Kano State Government, Commissioner of Police, Director DSS and all other relevant agencies to, as a matter of utmost urgency, identify, arrest, and prosecute the killers of Buhari Imam.

“SSANU will not, for once, relent its call on this matter, until the perpetrators of these dastardly and barbaric acts are brought to book.”;
