The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has released the official sub-national GDP data for Kano State, indicating robust economic growth from 2019 to 2023.
As reported, “Kano State’s GDP increased from ₦10.7 trillion in 2019 to ₦16.8 trillion in 2023.”
In a statement, Aliyu Isa Aliyu, Ph.D., the Statistician-General of Kano State, emphasized that the Bureau is dedicated to “promoting data-driven governance, which is a top priority for the administration of His Excellency, Governor Abba K Yusuf.”
The statement further noted that Agriculture has consistently contributed to this growth, rising from ₦3.2 trillion to ₦5.4 trillion during the same period. The industrial sector also experienced growth, albeit at a slower rate, increasing from ₦1.7 trillion to ₦2.4 trillion.
The services sector saw the most significant increase, soaring from ₦5.8 trillion in 2019 to ₦9.0 trillion in 2023, making it the largest contributor to Kano’s economy.
The NBS indicated that the data collection process commenced in March 2025 in collaboration with state statistical agencies, and the final results have now been shared with the Kano State Bureau of Statistics.
To further analyze the findings, the Bureau has established a technical committee of experts. The members include: Dr. Tijjani Ahmad from the Federal Polytechnic, Kazaure; Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Abdullahi from the Economics Department at Bayero University Kano; Dr. Yakubu Al-Amin (Yakson Al-amin Usman) from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Dr. Hamisu Sadi Ali, Director General of Kano PDMO; and Nazir Halliru, Director General of KAN-INVEST.
The Bureau stated that the committee members will be formally notified of their responsibilities.
