Kano: Bagwai LG bans farming in cattle grazing reserves, begins enforcement

Published on June 02, 2025 at 09:55 AM

The Bagwai Local Government Council in Kano state has announced a ban on all farming activities within designated cattle grazing reserves in the area.

This was revealed in a statement issued by the Information Officer of the LG, Shehu Bello Shanono.

According to the statement, the decision was announced by the acting chairman of the council, Alhaji Haruna Garba Sarkin Biro, during a stakeholder meeting held at the district head’s office in Bagwai.

He said the move aligns with the directive of the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, aimed at addressing the growing tension over illegal grazing and land encroachment across the state.

Alhaji Haruna emphasized that grazing reserves are strictly for herders and not to be used for farming.

He added that individuals seeking access to these areas must present valid documentation for verification at designated government centres, as required annually.

Also speaking at the meeting, the leader of the NNPP caucus in Bagwai, Alhaji Salisu Garba Bagwai, warned herders operating outside approved areas to return to compliance or face sanctions.

He noted that the decision was a collective step towards restoring law and order.

Also, the NNPP Chairman in Bagwai Local Government, Alhaji Masa’ud Badau, stated that the initiative would help resolve long-standing disputes over grazing areas and promote peace in the region.

The council said enforcement of the ban will begin immediately, with local authorities tasked with ensuring full compliance.
