Tension gripped the Barnawa area of Kaduna on Monday evening after youths protested the alleged killing of a young man by members of the Special Joint Task Force (SJTF).

The SJTF made up of officers from the army, police, DSS, NDLEA, and NSCDC had reportedly raided a suspected criminal hideout near Barnawa market.

Details of the incident are still sketchy.

Authorities have not released the victim’s name, and it is unclear if he was targeted or hit by a stray bullet.

Angered by the development, large crowds of youths poured into the streets, blocking major roads and setting tyres ablaze, disrupting traffic between Barnawa and other parts of the city.

The protesters demanded justice, accusing security forces of excessive force.

Police later restored order after deploying more officers to the scene.

Confirming the incident, Kaduna police spokesperson Mansir Hassan said:

“Yes, we have received information about the incident, and the commissioner of police has ordered a full-scale investigation into the matter.”
