Kaduna govt, KASU lecturers set for dialogue to resolve strike

Published on April 30, 2025 at 07:12 PM

The Kaduna State Government has said it is ready to begin talks with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter, in order to end the ongoing strike by the lecturers and restore normal academic activities at the university.

According to information available to newsmen, the demands presented by the lecturers are being carefully reviewed.

The source stated that the government believes that most of the issues can be resolved through patient dialogue, and that some of the demands made by the union date back as far as 2016. However, the current administration is making efforts to address them.

The source explained that as part of Governor Uba Sani’s 7-Point Sustain Agenda, reforms in education are already underway.

For example, tuition fees at KASU and other state-owned institutions have been reduced by more than 40%. The government is also investing more money in helping schools gain accreditation for their programmes and in developing new ones.

At KASU, 34 out of 58 academic programmes have received full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC). Another 15 programmes are still awaiting NUC results. In addition, 13 new programmes that were introduced in 2024 have been verified by the NUC.

The government stressed that education is one of the top priorities of the administration and is viewed as a critical tool for the development of Kaduna State.

The source concluded by saying that the government is committed to holding a sincere and constructive meeting with the ASUU chapter of KASU to address the concerns raised.
