Elvin Abrea, 32, was riding Fly With The Wind at the Hapi Jockey Club’s meeting in Padre Garcia when disaster happened.

Abrea was competing against six others at the Philippines’ only ground.

He tried to shift right during the competitive battle while sandwiched in a pack.

But Fly With The Wind appeared to clip the heels of another horse, Magnolia Ariana, that was being ridden by JL Paano.

It caused the thoroughbred to trip and fall, hurling Abrea to the ground.

Moments later, another horse, charging from behind and with next to no time to manoeuvre out of the way, galloped over to the top of the stricken jockey.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Abrea was tragically killed in the accident, an official statement later confirmed.

A report from local stewards said: “Approaching the 1000 meter mark. EA Abrea (Fly With The Wind) was unseated.

“Stewards observed that Fly With The Wind clipped the heels of the horse (Magnolia Ariana) in front of him.

“JL Paano when asked explained that he did not feel anything and his mount was running a straight path.”

An official statement later confirmed Abrea’s sad passing.

It read: “The Philippine Jockey Club mourns the passing of jockey Abrea, who sadly passed away following a riding incident.

“We extend our deepest and sincerest condolences to his family, loved ones, fellow jockeys, trainers and the entire racing community.

“Jockey Abrea’s dedication, bravery and passion for horse racing will be remembered with respect and gratitude.

“During this time of profound loss, the Philippine Jockey Club stands in solidarity with the bereaved family and the racing community as we honour his life and service to the sport.

“Rest in peace, jockey Elvin Abrea.”
