The Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA) has seized expired, contaminated, and poorly stored goods worth ₦14,447,650 following a statewide sanitary clean up.

Speaking to journalists about the development, the Managing Director of the agency, Sanitarian Adamu Sabo, said the exercise was conducted in all 27 local government councils

According to him, the exercise focused on markets, shops, stores, and various commercial outlets, with the aim of enforcing environmental health standards and identifying items deemed unfit for human consumption or usage.

“The operation was legally guided by Section 5(1)(2) of the Jigawa State Environmental Protection Law 2009 (as amended), and Section 125(1) of the Jigawa State Public Health Security Law 2024,”; Sabo said.

He explained that every seized item went through appropriate legal channels, including verification, documentation, and official approval before being destroyed, in accordance with applicable health regulations.

“This action is not punitive, but preventive — intended to safeguard the health and safety of our citizens and to maintain the environmental and sanitary standards of our state,”; he clarified.

Sabo emphasized the agency’s ongoing collaboration with market unions, traders, and local leaders to ensure full adherence to hygiene and public health laws across Jigawa.

He also called on residents to report any unhygienic practices or unlawful sale of unsafe goods.
