As Carragher analyzed the team’s defending, he turned his attention to the £40 million summer signing.

Carragher remarked: “It’s amusing to watch him [Kerkez] play. , who Liverpool greatly misses, I used to say was like having Kevin De Bruyne at right-back.”

“With , it feels like having Darwin Nunez at left-back.”

Nunez was acquired for a fee of £64m, potentially rising to £85m in 2022, and the Uruguayan forward scored 40 goals in 143 appearances.

While it may be unfair to label him a flop signing, he has certainly underperformed relative to his transfer fee and left behind a collection of embarrassing misses.

Liverpool signed Kerkez to provide competition and likely a future replacement for Andy Robertson, who will turn 32 in March.

Currently, Carragher believes Robertson has outperformed Kerkez.

He stated: “No [the rotation hasn’t benefited Kerkez], but I think it’s working for Liverpool because I don’t believe he should be starting every week.

“You have too good a player in Andy Robertson who also needs to play regularly.

“When Andy Robertson has played, he hasn’t featured as much as Kerkez, and you would probably say Andy Robertson’s performances have been superior to Kerkez’s.

“He’s found it challenging; it’s been tough for him. He’s a young player, but he will need to improve in the second half of the season, that’s for sure.”

Kerkez is only 22, and as Carragher noted, he is likely to improve as he becomes more accustomed to playing for a club of Liverpool's stature.

The overall form of the Reds has likely not aided Kerkez's development either.

Earlier in the season, ‘s team set several unwanted records as their form plummeted.

They became just the fourth team to start a season as defending champions with six or more defeats in their first 12 matches, following in 1995-96 (six), in 2015-16 (seven), and in 2016-17 (six).

While their form has stabilized since then, they still face a battle to secure a top-four finish and qualify for the next season.
