INSTAGRAM is facing widespread technical issues, with thousands of users worldwide unable to send messages.
The outage appears to have begun in the early hours of today and continues to be reported across the globe.
Over 12,000 users reported issues with the Meta-owned platform.
Nearly three-quarters of the complaints are being registered by app users.
Failures when sending private messages on the app appeared to be the most common issue for users.
Instagrammers also reported being unable to view old chat history on the platform in some cases.
This could indicate that the Meta-owned platform could be struggling to communicate with its backend servers.
Other services owned by Instagram’s parent company , including and , appear to be working normally.
The Sun has contacted Meta for comment.
