Systems Consultant at Interpol National Central Bureau, Chikwe Udensi, asserts that the notion of recruiting more police officers will only exacerbate the challenges Nigeria is currently facing.
Udensi expressed this viewpoint during an interview on Arise Television, which was monitored by DAILY POST on Friday.
He highlighted that the police force is underfunded and that the existing officers are deeply dissatisfied.
“The concept of adding more police officers is troubling. That is not the core issue. Bringing in additional personnel will only complicate the existing problems we are encountering. The police force is underfunded, and those already serving are completely dissatisfied.
“There is no incentive for anyone to join the Nigeria Police Force. I remain concerned about the idea of increasing recruitment. That is not the solution to the problem.
“If you have a significant issue without addressing it and you simply add to the problem, you will only complicate matters further.
“We have advised the government that the primary focus should be on improving welfare, morale, patriotism, and the motivation for individuals to work in the Police Force, which is currently very low. Those who are serving are entirely dissatisfied.
“Furthermore, the issues of training and the provision of necessary equipment are critical. However, more importantly, before hiring anyone, a thorough profiling process should be implemented.
“If there are adversaries within the organization, that presents a serious and substantial issue, which is precisely what our Armed Forces are currently experiencing. There are individuals who should not be part of the Armed Forces; they are saboteurs.
>The challenge of having internal enemies is significant. Therefore, the solution is not merely to hire more personnel.
“You will only worsen the situation. If you choose to recruit more individuals, you must first ensure that a comprehensive welfare package is in place,” he stated.
