In 2023, the Labour Party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged the nominated Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Omupitan, to safeguard his reputation by ensuring the conduct of credible elections in the country.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, Obi emphasized that the nominee, who is awaiting Senate confirmation, must commit to doing the right thing throughout his tenure to establish a positive legacy and avoid being remembered for negative reasons.

He pointed out that Omupitan should keep in mind that he will eventually leave office and must live with the consequences of his decisions as the leader of the electoral body.

“It is for the benefit of everyone. None of us will be here forever, and no one will hold his position indefinitely.

“Therefore, regardless of the roles we occupy, we must strive to do what is right. I wish him well.

“Once he (Omupitan) is confirmed, I will congratulate him and remind him that one day he will vacate that position. He must ensure he maintains his reputation,” he stated.

The former governor of Anambra State further articulated that Nigeria has endured enough electoral challenges and requires an impartial body that can effectively conduct credible elections.
