Human rights attorney, Femi Falana, SAN, has stated that positions within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should be publicly advertised.
Falana made this remark on Wednesday while addressing questions during an interview on Politics Today, a program on Channels Television that was monitored by DAILY POST.
He was commenting on the appointments of the INEC chairman and other senior officials within the nation’s electoral body.
DAILY POST reports that since Nigeria's return to democracy in 1999, INEC chairpersons have consistently been appointed by the President.
Discussing the independence of Nigeria’s electoral body, Falana stated: “Positions in INEC should be advertised as recommended by the Uwais panel. What other African nations have implemented is a system where vacant positions are publicly advertised.
“This was the recommendation of the Uwais panel back in 2008, suggesting that the selection of members for the electoral body should occur through public advertisement, allowing credible individuals to apply for the role of conducting elections.
“In this context, we are referring to men and women of character and integrity who will seek these positions. The public should be given the chance to raise objections against any applicants deemed unqualified.”
