Man Utd vs Athletic: Rio Ferdinand in hospital, to miss Europa League clash

Published on May 08, 2025 at 06:35 PM

Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, will not be part of TNT Sports’ coverage team for the team’s Europa League semi-final second at Old Trafford onThursdaynight.

Ferdinand has been hospitalised with a sickness bug.

It is understood the bug also affected other members of his family.

OnWednesday, Ferdinand posted a picture of himself giving a thumbs-up from a hospital bed, saying he was “gutted”; to be missing the semi-finals in the European competitions this midweek.

He wrote on X: “Wishing the team all the best – I’ll be watching every minute from the iPad!”;

Ferdinand has been a regular part of TNT’s European coverage in recent years, and has often been a co-commentator for United’s games.

He was on commentary for the first leg of the game, which Manchester United won 3-0 at San Mames.
